   This „Koffie Gulden Sporen“ enamel sign is from a former coffee company in the city of Kortrijk (Courtrai) in Flanders, Belgium. „Gulden Sporen“ refers to the Battle of the Golden Spurs (Guldensporenslag in Flemish) that was fought on the „Groeningekouter“ just outside the city walls of Kortrijk on the 11th of July in the year 1302. This was a big battle between the Flemish common people (on foot) and the French armoured chevalry (on horses). The Flemish people won the battle and afterwards a lot of golden spurs were recovered on the battlefield, taken from the fallen and slain knights, hence the name this battle got. This is more than 700 hears ago, but nowadays the 11th of July is the national holiday of Flanders.
